Inclusive, Sustainable, and Service-Driven Transport for All.
Transformative Transport Services Management in India (TSMI)
Transport Services Management in India (TSMI)
Overview
Building on the insights and impact of our Transformative Transport work in Africa, TRATSEDI is turning its attention to one of the world’s most dynamic and complex mobility landscapes — India. The country’s transport ecosystem is as vast and varied as its geography: from bustling metros and rapidly developing smart cities to rural roads that link remote communities.
While India has made remarkable progress in infrastructure development and the adoption of new technologies, persistent gaps remain in service quality, inclusivity, and accessibility. These challenges disproportionately affect women, people with disabilities, and underserved communities.
Transformative Transport Services Management in India (TSMI) is our latest initiative, designed to reimagine mobility through inclusive, sustainable, and service-focused approaches. By spotlighting innovations, grassroots initiatives, and forward-thinking policy frameworks, the project seeks to transform how transport services are planned, delivered, and experienced — creating systems that work for everyone.
Why This Project Matters
Size and Complexity: India is home to 1.4 billion people, with transport needs that vary dramatically between urban, peri-urban, and rural areas.
Environmental Imperatives: With rising emissions and congestion, the transport sector plays a central role in India’s climate future.
Social Inclusion: Women, people with disabilities, and low-income communities often face systemic barriers to safe and reliable mobility.
Global South Relevance: Lessons from India’s transport transformation can inspire similar initiatives in other developing economies.
Project Goals
Document Best Practices: Identify and analyse innovative service models — from grassroots Dial-a-Ride schemes to electric mobility startups.
Promote Inclusive Service Design: Showcase transport solutions that prioritise accessibility, safety, and dignity for all.
Facilitate Knowledge Exchange: Connect Indian practitioners, policymakers, and researchers with global peers in the TRATSEDI network.
Support Policy Impact: Translate research insights into actionable recommendations for government and industry.
