Proposed Table of Contents

Transformative Transport Services: Advancing Inclusion, Innovation, Sustainability and Wellbeing

The book is organised into four interconnected thematic parts, moving from the human dimensions of mobility to the transformation of transport service ecosystems, the opportunities and challenges of emerging technologies, and the institutional arrangements required for sustainable transport futures.

The structure brings together 13 contributed chapters, alongside an introductory and concluding chapter, to provide a coherent examination of how transport services can move beyond operational efficiency towards improving individual wellbeing, expanding mobility opportunities and addressing structural inequalities.

Chapter 1 — Introduction

Transformative Transport Services: Rethinking Mobility, Wellbeing and Sustainable Futures

This chapter introduces the foundations of Transformative Transport Services Research (TTSR), establishes the book's central arguments and outlines the relationships between mobility, service ecosystems, inclusion, technological innovation and sustainability.

Part I — Transport Services, Human Wellbeing and Social Inclusion

Understanding how transport services shape people's safety, dignity, participation and everyday wellbeing.

Chapter 2. Perceived Safety and Security Challenges in Women's Pedestrian Mobility Services in Low- and Middle-Income Neighbourhoods of a Traditional African City | Umar Obafemi Salisu, Ayobami Ademola Akanmu and Sekinat Motunrayo Sanni

Chapter 3. Transforming Urban Mobility in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Conceptual Framework Linking Sustainable Transport to Employee Well-Being | Rasheed Olawale Azeez

Chapter 4. Cultivating Inclusive Organisational Culture in Urban Transit Operators in Nigeria | Zaccheaus Olufunminiyi Olonade, Kamorudeen Abimbola Oyetola and Oluwatobi O. Omotoye

Chapter 5. Investigating the Causal Factors and Manifestations of Unruly Passenger Behaviours Before, During, and After Boarding | Adetayo O. Adeniran and Goodness Olaleye

Thematic focus: This part establishes the human-centred foundations of transformative transport services. It examines how transport environments, organisational practices and service interactions influence safety, dignity, inclusion and wellbeing. Collectively, the chapters demonstrate that transport transformation must be evaluated not simply by how effectively people move, but by how mobility services affect their lives.

Part II — Informal Transport, Local Innovation and Service Ecosystem Transformation

Exploring how informal transport systems, stakeholder relationships and grassroots innovations can enable more inclusive and resilient mobility.

Chapter 6. From Survival Mobility to Transformative Transport Services: Reconfiguring Boda-Boda Systems in Urban Africa | Ronett Atukunda and colleagues

Chapter 7. Leveraging Stakeholder Engagement for an Inclusive Paratransit Mobility Service in India | Kumar Saurabh and Rudrodip Majumdar

Chapter 8. From "Trotro" to Tech: Platformisation, Informality and the Rebranding of Urban Mobility in Ghana | Kofi Aning Jnr, Melissa Zulu and Linda Narh

Chapter 9. Niche Transport Ecosystems: Building Alternative Local Structures for Transformative Transport Services | Richmond Kwesi Ansah and Priscilla Chidimma Nwachukwu

Thematic focus: This part examines transport transformation within informal and resource-constrained environments. Rather than treating informality simply as a problem to be eliminated, the chapters explore the capabilities, relationships and innovations already embedded within local transport ecosystems. Particular attention is given to stakeholder collaboration, resilience, entrepreneurship, institutional reform and the possibilities for moving from individual adaptation towards wider systemic transformation.

Part III — Digital Transformation, Intelligent Mobility and Emerging Service Ecosystems

Examining how digital technologies, artificial intelligence and connected infrastructures can reshape the design and delivery of transport services.

Chapter 10. Marketing EV Charging Services: A Transformative Transport Service Perspective on Digital Strategy and Adoption Dynamics | Girard Boakye-Yiadom

Chapter 11. AI as Coordination Capital: Governing Interoperable, Carbon-Aware Mobility Service Ecosystems | Olaniyi Evans

Chapter 12. When Buildings Must Talk to Vehicles: Rethinking Autonomous Mobility Through a Transformative Transport Service Perspective | Ku Swee Yong, Olawale Olalekan and Emmanuel Mogaji

Thematic focus: This part considers the transformative possibilities of emerging mobility technologies while questioning assumptions that technological advancement automatically delivers better transport services. The chapters examine digital participation, AI-enabled coordination, autonomous mobility and infrastructure integration, highlighting the importance of accessibility, interoperability, accountability and service ecosystem readiness.

Part IV — Sustainable Transport Systems, Governance and Environmental Transformation

Investigating how service design, regulation and operational innovation can support environmentally sustainable and socially responsible transport systems.

Chapter 13. Designing Mobility for All: How Digital Platforms, the Sharing Economy, and Regulations Support Sustainable Transport Services | Asuman Matongolo and colleagues

Chapter 14. Evaluating Environmental Efficiency in Intermodal Transport: A Transformative Approach to Sustainable Logistics Services | Natalija Kostić, Milorad Kilibarda, Milan Andrejić and Vukašin Pajić

Thematic focus: This part extends transformative transport services research to environmental sustainability, regulatory coordination and system-wide efficiency. It examines how platform governance, sharing-economy arrangements and intermodal logistics can contribute to decarbonisation and sustainable service delivery. Together, the chapters emphasise that sustainable transport transformation requires coordinated changes in service design, institutional arrangements and operational decision-making.

Chapter 15 — Conclusion

Transformative Transport Services: From Everyday Adaptation to Systemic Change

The concluding chapter brings together the theoretical, empirical and practical insights developed across the four parts. It considers how transport services can progress from helping people cope with existing constraints towards expanding mobility capabilities and ultimately transforming the institutional, infrastructural and social conditions that produce transport disadvantage.

The chapter also identifies emerging research priorities and implications for transport service providers, policymakers, regulators, technology developers and researchers.
